Columbus Biz Insider: “Biggest Japanese auto plants in the U.S.”

By Dan Eaton

November 5, 2013

Honda gets a good bang for its manufacturing buck.

Though its Marysville auto plant only has the fifth-highest employment among the 12 U.S. plants owned by Japanese automakers, it produced the second-most number of vehicles in 2012. This production strength comes as Honda Motor Co. is giving more work to its Ohio operations, a topic I’ve written about  extensively in the past few weeks (you should check it out).

Japanese automakers and their dealer networks were responsible for 1.36 million direct and indirect jobs in 2012, according to a study by Rutgers University professor Thomas Prusa conducted for the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association with 81,000 of those jobs U.S. manufacturing, distribution and R&D workers.

Who makes what where, and how many workers does it take to do it? Using data compiled from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and company resources, I ranked the U.S. auto assembly plants owned by Japanese-based automakers by employment.
